Number of Aldi supermarkets in the Netherlands 2014-2023

Aldi is one of the leading supermarket chains in the Netherlands. As of 2023, there were 485 Aldi supermarkets in the country. The number of branches peaked in 2016, at 507. According to the most recent figures, Noord-Brabant and Gelderland had the highest number of Aldi supermarkets. In both provinces, the discounter had 80 or more branches.

 Leading supermarket chains 

In terms of the number of stores, Aldi is the third-largest supermarket chain in the Netherlands, after Albert Heijn and Jumbo. Aldi has slightly more branches than another German discounter, Lidl. In 2022, there were just under 440 Lidl supermarkets in the Netherlands.

 Market share 

Although the number of Lidl supermarkets was lower than the number of Aldi branches, Lidl had a higher market share in 2022. Aldi had a market share of just over five percent that year, making it the fifth-largest supermarket chain in the Netherlands. Albert Heijn was the leading supermarket chain in the country, with a market share of 37 percent.
